Mark Nagales is the Vice Mayor and City Councilmember for South San Francisco (District 2), proudly representing the Westborough neighborhood where he grew up. First elected to the City Council in November 2018, Mark made history as one of the first Filipinos elected to public office in South San Francisco. In 2022, he was honored to serve as the city's first Filipino Mayor, following terms as Vice Mayor in 2021, 2023, and currently in 2026.
Proven Regional Leadership
Mark has established himself as a powerful voice for North San Mateo County on critical regional boards. He currently serves as the Vice Chair of the San Mateo County Transportation Authority (SMCTA), which oversees major infrastructure and transportation investments. He also represents the community as a Board Member on the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG), the Caltrain Local Policy Maker Group (LPMG), and the San Francisco International Airport Community Round Table, ensuring local voices shape the future of Bay Area transit, housing, and economic planning.
A Career Dedicated to Public Service
Mark's deep policy expertise is rooted in more than a decade of legislative and constituent service experience. He previously served as legislative Aide to former Assemblymembers Fran Pavley and Gene Mullin, and as the Constituent Services Director for former Congresswoman Jackie Speier. In his role with Congresswoman Speier, Mark assisted countless seniors, veterans, and families — successfully recovering over $5 million in veterans' benefits.
Before his election to the City Council, Mark spent a decade guiding local city planning and community health, serving as a Parks and Recreation Commissioner (2008–2014; Chair in 2013) and Planning Commissioner (2015–2018; Chair in 2018).
Professional Housing & Transportation Expertise
Professionally, Mark brings a deep understanding of housing and public transit issues. From 2018 to 2023, he worked as the San Mateo County Outreach Coordinator for Project Sentinel, a non-profit housing counseling agency advising tenants and landlords on their rights and responsibilities. He currently serves as a Principal Government and Community Relations Representative for BART and is a proud member of AFSCME Local 3993.
Rooted in the Community
A lifelong resident of San Mateo County, Mark has been a part of the South San Francisco community for over 30 years. He is a proud product of local public schools, having attended Los Cerritos Elementary, Alta Loma Middle School, and South San Francisco High School before earning his Bachelor's degree in History and Political Science from San Francisco State University in 2003.
Mark and his wife, Amy, are the proud parents of two young children, Aidan and Josephine, who both attend public school in the South San Francisco Unified School District.
